Project: "Development of building materials with reduced environmental footprint"

Our R&D Department has successfully participated in the national & EU -funded research program: "Development of building materials with reduced environmental footprint".

The aim of the proposed research project is the efficient exploitation of natural resources under the use of by-products of various mining and manufacturing processes for the development of new building materials.

In particular, the following byproducts are to be used:

i) sewage from the physicochemical treatment of liquid wastes of the paint industry
ii) by-products/residues of mining processes
iii) by-products of the ceramic industry

The building materials that will be developed are related to:

i) repairing mortars by the use of the sewage from the physicochemical treatment of liquid wastes of VIVECHROM SA
ii) mortars of special applications (e.g. refractories) by the use of mining byproducts of Grecian Magnesite company and roasted byproducts of the ceramics industry as inert materials
iii) floors, repair mortars by the use of the magnesia Sorel cement as cementing phase and as inert materials: a) marble by-products of NORDIA SA, b) mining wastes of Grecian Magnesite SA and c) sewage from the physicochemical treatment of liquid wastes of VIVECHROM SA.

By the use of the recycled materials and their incorporation in useful building materials, a raw materials saving, a reduced energy waste, a minimization of wastes, a minimization of the environmental footprint of the companies and a simultaneous reduction of the environmental risk is achieved.
