The collagen fibres of the animal hide are subject to biodegradation and for this reason chrome tanning sulphate is used as a tanning stabilization/preservation agent. The chrome salt is added in an acid solution bath (pH <3) containing the pelts, where the pH must be slowly raised to higher values for the chrome to react and stabilize the collagen. To accomplish this, a pure natural DBM grade of low iron and very low activity is added in the solution.
