ActiveMag® 95

ActiveMag® 95 for your vessel’s scrubbing needs

ActiveMag® 95 is a high purity, highly reactive calcined magnesium oxide, produced under closely controlled conditions to give a finely divided white powder with uniform and consistent reactivity.

ActiveMag® 95 has been designed, developed and produced by Grecian Magnesite S.A. – A top-notch product with a top-notch performance in vessel exhaust gas cleaning systems.

In addition, ActiveMag® 95 is widely used as a magnesium source for flat glass production.

Main Uses & Advantages

The current EGCS (Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems) fleet, i.e. vessels with installed scrubbing systems, is growing rapidly. Such systems offer the alternative to continue using heavy fuel oil while achieving low emissions, equivalent to the expensive low sulfur marine gas oil. Of the various solutions offered, closed loop/hybrid installations are expected to increase their market share due to more countries imposing wash water discharge bans (open loop scrubbers operation) in light of environmental concerns (including the EU which has formed a dedicated forum).

ActiveMag® 95 is effectively used as SOx absorbent in vessel scrubbers designed to handle caustic calcined MgO powders. Such systems offer several advantages over scrubbers utilizing caustic soda (NaOH) or hydrated lime (Ca(OH)2). ActiveMag® 95 is a milder base that cannot be overdosed, it offers higher alkalinity and sludges of lower volumes. Moreover, use of ActiveMag® 95 offers greater flexibility than magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) slurries which are often associated with stability problems and limited availability or encumbered logistics.

The consumption of ActiveMag® 95 depends on several factors like the installed scrubbing system, the emissions, the percentage of Sulphur in the fuel, etc. Still, a typical consumption would be around 35-40kg ActiveMag® 95/tone of high sulfur fuel offering efficiency of 97% or higher, when added as a 25-30% slurry prepared on-board, rendering ActiveMag® 95 a cost-effective alternative to low Sulphur marine fuel. ActiveMag® 95 is the safest alkali to use on board. The product is non-toxic, non-corrosive and therefore safe to handle and inhale.

ActiveMag® 95 can be delivered by containers to several main ports worldwide.

ActiveMag® 95 applications include its use as a magnesium source for flat glass production, exhibiting beneficially low, iron content and low levels of trace elements (e.g. Ni, Mn, Cr).

Packaging & Storage

ActiveMag® 95 is available in powder form: In big bags of 900kg with inner nylon and bottom spout. In 20 kg paper bags on pallets, wrapped in shrink film.

ActiveMag® 95 has a shelf life of 12 months provided that the product is stored in a clean dry storage area under proper conditions. Magnesium oxide absorbs moisture from the air and forms lumps. Always re-seal partly used bags.

Marine Scrubbers

Legislation requires the mitigation of sulfur oxide pollution caused by the combustion emissions of high sulfur fuels in cargo and passenger vessels. Only fuels with 0,5% max sulfur can be used worldwide, the limit becoming even stricter at 0,1% in various Emission Control Areas (ECAs).
