TANMA® Powder is a high purity hard-burned, free-flowing, white magnesium oxide powder, especially designed for use as a basifying agent.
TANMA® Powder is the trade name of the tanning magnesia grade with a leading position in the international market.
TANMA® Powder was developed by Grecian Magnesite SA in close collaboration with the leather tanning industry and its research supporting institution to meet the most demanding requirements of this application.
Main Uses & Advantages
TANMA® Powder has a quality appearance, being a white, gritless, free-flowing powder. It is produced by selection of special raw materials and controlled sintering and sizing processes to achieve a balanced microstructure, reactivity and grain size, with low free lime, iron and manganese levels. It has a low content of silica, which is finely dispersed and non-abrasive.
TANMA® Powder is the ideal basifier for chrome tannage, effecting a gradual, gentle rise in the pH without overshoots, ensuring uniform chrome stabilization and complete dissolution after 6-8 h without risking staining or spotting of the pelt.
Typically added at 0,3% to 0,5% on limed hide weight, it ensures:
- Reliable performance without pH initial peaks, leading to a uniform chrome distribution throughout the leather and a smoother, finer grain.
- Reduced labor/handling costs by eliminating the need for repeated additions.
- No risk of abrasion to the pelt and consistent reliable results.
- Great reduction of the risk of green stains caused by local precipitation of chrome.
- Production of wet blue leather with a pale colour, suitable for the production of white and all dye shades.
- A higher exhaustion of chrome leading to lower offers of chrome, with consequent cost savings and effluent improvement.
Loading adjustments may be required to achieve the correct balance depending on the pH value during pickling and the quantity of chrome used.

Packaging & Storage
TANMA Powder is available: In big bags of 1.000kg with inner nylon and bottom spout. In 25 kg paper bags on pallets wrapped in shrink film.
TANMA Powder has a shelf-life of 9 months provided that the product is stored in a clean dry storage area under proper conditions. Magnesium oxide absorbs moisture and forms lumps. Always re-seal partly used bags.

Leather Tanning
In leather production, it is imperative to stabilize the collagen fibers of the animal hides so that they are no longer subject to biodegradation. This is accomplished by the tanning of the leather with the use of stabilization/preservation agents. Chrome-based salts are the most common agents used in the so-called mineral tanning (chromium, zirconium or aluminium).
