MAGNESITE IS NOTHING BUT A CELEBRITY ROCK
MAGNESITE IS NOTHING BUT A CELEBRITY ROCK
Sculptures and memorials are not made of it. Almost everything else is. The versatile Μagnesite tacitly participates in the widest range of modern day uses, to the benefit of civilization and the environment.
We’ve played our part. For sixty five years we’ve made it our business to create Magnesite products and grades for practically all industrial applications. Some of them have sprung right out of our laboratory. Most of them we developed alongside our clients. Every single one of them can be traced back to our mines and our superior processing technology.

One invaluable mineral.
Hundreds of finished goods.
And in between, 65 years of mining history in the making.

The Portolos family got into the exciting business of mining in 1914. True to the family legacy and ever eager to excel, the company prioritized R&D and managed to develop products for practically all magnesite applications known to date.
As the magnesite specialists we proudly are, we offer a wide range of application-specific grades of Caustic Calcined Magnesia, Deadburned (Sintered) Magnesia, Magnesium Carbonate (Natural Raw Magnesite), Basic Monolithic Refractories & Dunite (Natural Magnesium Silicate) for a host-lot of industries; from iron & steel, mining & metallurgy to manufacturing, construction, and the environment.
Our expertise and meticulous attention result in products, which lead their field in the consistency of their chemical and physical properties. Quality of products and integrity of our operations have paid off in customer satisfaction and a leading position in international markets.

Top quality magnesite is a work of nature
[ we provide the rest]
Nature provides the materials that human intelligence turns into high quality products. At times, these materials happen to be of rare quality. This is the case of our highest purity natural calcined magnesium oxide AK98®HR, mined and processed for the most demanding applications. It is a first-class alternative to costly, top-end, synthetic magnesium oxides and the ideal source for a wide range of specialized applications.

In more than one way! Most industries try hard (or not that hard!) to mitigate their impact on the natural environment, or put simply, to do less harm. We have been walking down that path for more than a century already: vegetation, pure air and clean water are the earth’s most valuable resources. No toxic or hazardous materials are used during our mining and production processes, thereby safeguarding human health and the environment. The use of thickeners allows us to recycle and recover more than 90% of the water used in production.
We employ advanced filtration systems and operate a state-of-the-art flue gas desulfurization (FGD) plant to control emissions. We are proud to operate the first all-electric underground mine in Europe, located on Evia Island, with zero carbon footprint.
Our dedication to clean and renewable energy is evident in our continuous investment in photovoltaic (PV) plants and our initiative to replace fossil fuels in our kilns with sustainably-produced biomass. To further our efforts, we actively participate in innovative projects such as carbon capture, storage, and utilization technologies.
We are also committed to the circular economy by continuously increasing the use of old fine Run of Mine stockpiles, including processing by-products and mining wastes, to develop new, innovative products such as our dunite series, OLIDUN.
In our efforts to restore nature we use special software for surface planning and automated watering; we replace topsoil and revegetate using trees from our own plant nursery. To date, we have restored over 1,64 km² of disturbed areas and planted more than 124.000 trees and seedlings. We take every pain to preserve nature in an area long appreciated for its beauty.
We also make products for the environment: Dunite, a natural magnesium silicate, is utilized for CO2 sequestration to combat climate change, while soil decontamination applications and wastewater or flue gas treatments, demonstrate our magnesium oxide's active, multifunctional role in neutralizing pollutants.
